FAQs

 Growing Your Wild Patch

How much seed do I need?

In general we recommend seed packets per 100 sq feet (2 packets), 500 sq feet (4-6 packets) and 1,000 8-10 packets) sq feet.

What is 100 sq feet? Think of the area covered by a good sized car or SUV.

What is 500 sq feet? Think of a 2 car garage.

What is 1000 sq feet? Think of one half of a tennis court.

When should I plant my seeds?

Planting season plays a crucial role in your wild patch’s success. The best season to plant depends on your region. For most wildflower and grasses, spring to early summer or fall are the best times to plant.  However, Spring or early Summer is typical as long as you can properly prepare the site and care for your germinating seeds. Please see the regional guides below.

Midwest: The best time to plant is in the spring or early summer, after the last frost.  A cold snap could stunt or kill your newly planted seeds. You can also plant in fall after the first frost of the fall season to stop the seed from germinating until spring.

Mountain and Western: The best time to plant is late spring to early summer, after the last frost.

Northeast:  The best time to plant is in the spring or early summer, after the last frost.  A cold snap could stunt or kill your newly planted seeds. You can also plant in fall after the first frost of the fall season to stop the seed from germinating until spring.

Northwest:  The best time to plant is in the spring or early summer, after the last frost.  A cold snap could stunt or kill your newly planted seeds. For Southern California and coastal areas, you can also plant in fall as the milder temperature and additional rain can help your plants thrive.

Southeast:  The best time to plant is in the fall, winter, or spring.  Planting in the fall will allow the rainfall from the winter to water your new seedlings.

Southwest: The best time to plant is in the fall, winter, or spring.  Planting in the fall is typically the rainiest season and will help water your new seedlings.

Texas and Oklahoma: The best time to plant is in the fall, winter, or spring.  Planting in the fall is typically the rainiest season and will help water your new seedlings.

Where and when can specialty seed mixes be planted?

Our specialty seed mixes, such as the Bee Mix or Bird and Butterfly Mix are specially formulated to thrive across the continental U.S. and to appeal to a wide range of pollinators.  These mixes may be planted in any region. Please follow the regional guides detailed in the previous question.

How do I select the best site to plant my wild patch?

Your Wild Patch can be planted nearly anywhere to create your own mini meadow.  Our wildflower and grass seeds are developed to flourish in the unique climate of your region.  The best site will provide adequate sun and moisture to support the growth of your seedlings.

How do I plant my seeds?

Wildflower and grass seeds will grow alongside your existing foliage.  Depending on how you would like your space to look, you can simply broadcast your seeds by lighting tossing them loosely around your area. It may help your seeds establish if you lightly rake the area after broadcasting the seeds.  If you want to start from scratch, you can also clear the planting area of existing foliage and rocks.  If clearing the planting area, it is recommended you add compost or fertilizer to add nutrients back to the soil.

How much seed do I plant?

Your Wild Patch has been calculated to provide healthy plant coverage for your area.  A small patch will cover up to 200 square feet, a medium patch up to 550 square feet, and a large patch up to 1020 square feet.  You can “size up” if you want to create a more lush mini meadow.  If you need coverage for a larger size, please reach out to us via the Contact Page

Do I need to water my seeds?

Your seeds are specially formulated for the climate of your region.  However, if your area is experiencing unusual drought, it is recommended you water your seeds to help them establish and germinate.

What should I expect after planting my seeds?

WildPatch wildflower seed mixtures are blended to grow a range of colors and periods of bloom. You may see different stages of bloom from Spring-Fall and in a wide range of colors. Think blue, orange, pink, purple, red, white, and yellow. Flower height may range from 10 inches to 8 feet for our lucky Sunflower growers!

Do I have to plant new seeds every year?

Regional wildflower mixes are composed of a mix of annual and perennial flower seeds. Annuals grow for one growing season and serve the purpose of establishing cover quickly, give color to your wild patch in the first year, and provide habitat and food for pollinators. Additionally, the fast-growing annuals shield the slower growing perennial varieties (species that grow for 2+ years) so they have time to establish themselves in the soil and grow for years to come. Planting additional wildflower seeds each year will add variety and color to your wild patch and attract more pollinators.

Re-seeding wildflowers is an option we recommend, but not necessary, as long as you continue to care for your WildPatch!

About WildPatch -Why Grow Wild?

Are your seeds organic?

WildPatch seeds are not a certified organic product according to USDA regulations.

Our seeds are open-pollinated and grown in the U.S. Open-pollinated means that our wildflowers are naturally pollinated in open fields. We, and our local seed supplier, are committed to conservation and the promotion of ecologically sustainable and environmentally friendly seed production.

Our seeds are sourced from a local to us (Colorado) seed supplier who manages seed production in many different climates and locations to ensure that high quality, region specific seed is available for your zip code.  Our supplier has a registered seed technologist who supervises all aspects of quality control, including germination and purity testing so that we can guarantee that your seed meets and often exceeds minimum germination rates.

Are your seeds native?

Our wildflower seeds include wildflowers that are native to your area but because the seeds are sourced from wildflowers that may be grown elsewhere, the seeds cannot be labeled “native.”

Our mission as a company is to help individuals improve their local ecosystem.  Rest assured that we are committed to supplying only seeds that are regionally appropriate for your WildPatch.

We also hope to add an “all native” option in the future.  If you are interested in an all native Wild Patch, please reach out to us via the Contact Us page.

Where do you ship?

We ship to the entire continental U.S.  Unfortunately we cannot ship to Hawaii or Alaska at this time due to ecological regulations.

Can I order seed in larger quantities than offered on your product page?

Yes!  As a small business we are limited in the sizes we are able to advertise for immediate fulfillment but would love to help you create your wild patch, no matter the size.  Please reach out to us via the Contact Page for larger sizes.

Does WildPatch Seed donate seed or support any conservation organizations?

Yes!  WildPatch Seed donates any unsold seed to conservation organizations, local land resources (such as state parks), and educational organizations to spread our mission of conservation and help local ecosystems thrive.
